ABSTRACT
The 20th century has witnessed changes brought about by engineering inventions and scientific investigations that are as fundamental as those of the industrial revolution. Just as the mass production of iron, the generation of power from steam engines and the creation of machine tools transformed society in the 19th century, the mass production of steel, the application of various forms of power, the investigation of radioactivity and the development of medicine have fashioned the 20th century.
