ABSTRACT

Access to water is increasingly recognized as a pivotal issue in household food security. Calow et al. (2010) identify three key links between food security and access to water, namely (i) the fundamental productive aspect of water for irrigation and livestock watering, (ii) water for drinking and hygiene as a prerequisite for subsistence and labour and (iii) the time, funds and other resources spent obtaining water which influences the means available for other purposes.
