ABSTRACT

Jack is a student of mine, the father of three children. His eldest daughter is a high school freshman and has the same science teacher that Jack had nearly twenty-five years ago. On a recent test, she solved a problem and determined the “correct” answer, but she was penalized points for not having solved the problem correctly. Her answer was not determined by dumb luck, a miscalculation, forgetting units, or even forgetting specific steps in the problem solving process; she was penalized for not having solved the problem her teachers way.
