ABSTRACT
As surprising as it may seem, if you were to come across three different statements about Egyptian audiences of musalsalat made by commentators from different backgrounds, you would end up with very different — and even opposing — impressions. This chapter identifies three different groups within Egyptian society with rather different views on audiences of musalsalat, and it pinpoints the terms used by each group to describe these audiences.
