ABSTRACT
The term ‘culture’ can be used in many senses. In one of its selective meanings ‘culture’ refers to principles of discrimination and evaluation within the arts-and their practical outcomes (these valued institutions, that list of ‘serious’ works with clear artistic merit). In a more inclusive and descriptive meaning, ‘culture’ may mean ‘all the “signifying practices”—from language through the arts and philosophy to journalism, fashion and advertising’ of a given society (Williams 1981:13).
