ABSTRACT

Explorations of adaptation options (cf. Chapter 9) typically identify more adaptation options than can reasonably be implemented, especially in the short term. Deciding what to do first is often as important as deciding what to do at all (Füssel 2007). Thus, specific adaptation actions need to be selected based on criteria. In the majority of cases, different types of adaptation actions should be realised, as there will hardly ever be a clear optimum or one definitive solution. Stakeholder discussions and agreement (cf. Chapter 8) on the main objectives, the criteria and their weighting for the prioritisation of adaptation options are very useful for transparency in the decision-making process.
