ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some experiences in Italy relative to bridge employment. Although Italy does not at present have specific legislation on the matter, it is possible to identify forms of post-retirement employment managed on informal bases or through individual relations, added to a rather extensive area of irregular work after retirement. Although it is therefore difficult to provide a complete and detailed account of the situation in Italy, the chapter tries to summarize both empirical data describing the Italian situation and the main elements of the social and economic debate about how to cope with the issue of the consequences for older workers, their transitions from work to retirement and its consequences. For a better understanding, a brief summary of demographic data as well data on the national labor market and legislation on retirement is needed.
