ABSTRACT

Population aging is an inevitable phenomenon and will be at the center of debates over the next 20 years. From 2011 to 2030, the median age in Canada will rise from 39.9 years to 44.8 years. As underlined by Statistics Canada, Quebec is the province with the fastest aging population. The median age in Quebec has already reached 41.4 years and 15.7 percent of the population is aged 65 and over. In fact, statistics from July 1, 2011, showed that for the first time, people aged 65 and over outnumbered those aged 15 and under, the numbers being 1,253,600 and 1,241,700 respectively (Statistics Canada 2013). This new reality puts Quebec among the leaders of aging societies. In fact, the province ranks second after Japan.
