This chapter describes a number of aspects of the power of the relationship between landscape, economy and city/metropolis. As well as presenting a few international comparisons, the chapter looks at the spatial position of some of the cities within the Randstad and at their metropolitan potential from the perspective of landscape, centrality and infrastructure networks. It identifies examples – bright spots – from which a feasible design for a recognisable metropolitan space could possibly be derived.
