ABSTRACT

A researcher from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research studied a passenger and freight transport organisation's central control room. He tried to obtain data on the functions of the control room, and the tasks and behaviour of the staff who worked in it by means of observations, interviews and a questionnaire. The work of the control room was concerned with the loads of the organisation's transport units, their routes and timetables. The control room consisted of a row of seats and desks, and a display board, which ran the whole length of the room, parallel to the row of desks. The control room staff sat behind the desks facing the display board. Figure 2.8.1 shows the layout of the control room.
