ABSTRACT
Because of a general concern over certain conditions in the British coal industry (see British Coal Industries (A)) a variety of attempts have been made to find ways to improve these conditions. One such attempt was a research study, sponsored by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, to examine the relation between the form of work organisation and the undesirable conditions. Particular focus was to be given to the interaction between the physical, the technological and the social factors in the mining system.
