ABSTRACT
A merchant ship's purpose was to transport cargo and passengers. This demanded three main focuses of work for the crew: (1) aiding and facilitating the loading and discharging of cargo and passengers; (2) bringing the ship and her contents safely to her appointed destination; and (3) throughout the life of the ship maintaining and repairing her so that she would give efficient service.
