ABSTRACT

Nearly sixty years have now elapsed since the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923 and throughout this period the prime objective of development planning has been the transformation of a traditional agrarian economy and society into a modern industrial state. Considerable progress has been achieved, especially during the last twenty years, in the industrialization of the Turkish economy. Nevertheless, the agricultural sector continues to play a vital role, while at the same time presenting some of the most intractable problems in the country’s economic development.
