ABSTRACT

Nowadays in Japan, many live outdoor performances such as rock festivals and other music events are held. According to the Pia Research Institute, audiences for these events numbered 430,000 in total in 2001, but had risen to in excess of 1.56 million by 2006 (Pia Research Institute 2012: 21–2). The market size for these music events now accounts for 10 percent of the total concert market (¥152.7 billion). This includes large-scale outdoor concerts, such as the Fuji Rock Festival and Summer Sonic, which see audiences averaging 30,000 a day (see Table 8.1).
