Music events were, of course, also held in the past, and these included outdoor performances. However, as Hiroshi Nishida points out in his book about rock festivals, it was only in comparatively recent times that outdoor rock festivals came to be regularly held. When taking an overview of music events in Japan from the 1970s to 1990s, outdoor performances were not regular events, and even if an event was repeated, it would only be held twice at most (Nishida 2007: 26). What is thought to have changed this was the 1997 Fuji Rock Festival, which is generally recognized to have made outdoor performances commonplace.
