ABSTRACT

This chapter presents and analyses two cases in Denmark where culture has been the main driver of change and economic development. The first case is about the city of Skagen in Northern Jutland. The transformation began at the end of the nineteenth century when painters were attracted to Northern Jutland by the light, the local fisherman life and the village itself (Gyldendal 2012a). The painters settled down in the city of Skagen and attracted authors and other artists to join (Region Nordjylland 2012). It is a story about using art and culture to transform a village into a city and to develop a region's economy through art and tourism. It is also a story about creating a fashionable holiday destination and using the name Skagen as a brand to increase regional economy by adding a design product to the complex.
