ABSTRACT

Since 1972, Roskilde rock festival has taken place annually in the Danish town of Roskilde 30 km from Copenhagen. It is by far the largest Danish music festival and is internationally well known. It involves a professional organisation and 34,000 volunteers. This chapter analyses the importance of the festival for the town of Roskilde and its surrounding environment, particularly its importance for industrial development, which is quite extraordinary for a cultural festival. The municipality of Roskilde has created a business development strategy based on the festival and on the experience and culture industries. This has included the establishment of a large district, called Musicon, which is a culture business incubator.
