ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the 2012 Ambassadors groups of volunteers who supported visitors away from the main venues at the 2012 Olympic Games. It describes the development of the Ambassador programmes, the roles Ambassadors took and their management. Contrastsis made with the volunteers at the main venues, termed Games Makers. The chapter interviews with six Ambassador programme managers, five of which conducts ten months after the Games and one prior to the Games, complemented by secondary sources. While it views on the London 2012 Ambassador volunteers, it is important to realize that the London Games used four main groups of volunteers: Games Makers; Performance volunteers; Trailblazers all managed by The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), and Ambassadors, managed by local government. The 2012 Ambassador programme had its roots in Beijing. The effort/reward deal for volunteers was different to Games Makers, and this reflects in the way Ambassadors are managed.
