ABSTRACT

This chapter undertakes an analysis of some of the volunteer performances that took place at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. It aims to add to the social impact of events and festivals knowledge. The focus of the chapter is on the individual contributions made by thousands of dedicated volunteers including what they thought about their role in the ceremony and how it may have affected their lives. It also views on just some of the stories of those who put in hundreds of hours of dedicated work to help tell Australias story to a global audience of billions on the night of Australias main event. The chapter has an analysis of three artistic sequences of the Opening Ceremony will be undertaken. Exploring the performances: Welcome, Awakening and Arrivals provides a small insight into some of the detailed logistics of the Sydney Games volunteer experience from both a macro and micro perspective.
