ABSTRACT

Many years ago, just as I was starting my fi rst lecturing job, I was called to the examination hall where students were taking my fi nal year paper. I was taken into the sick room and there sat two of my students. My two best students. Both were highly motivated to do well. One had a gastric attack brought on by anxiety. The other was obsessively writing and rewriting his fi rst sentence, determined to make it the perfect beginning to a perfect answer and never quite satisfying himself.
