ABSTRACT

Summary: This chapter will trace the development of creativity in research on gifted individuals and link it to the more recent work on innovation education. The chapter will highlight key distinctions in the two processes as well as analyze similarities, using examples of work in curriculum, instruction, and assessment to illustrate key points. While creativity has always been associated with new ideas and methodologies that break from the past, innovation represents an attempt to synthesize past efforts and render them pragmatic in a given field of endeavor. Since education is an applied field, major breakthroughs may almost always be seen as innovations at both development and research levels. The purpose of innovation in education is to implement sound practices faithfully, according to research-based models.
