ABSTRACT

Summary: An innovative future-focused culture is needed to address global, regional and local needs and opportunities for sustainable social, environment and economic well-being. Science and technology are likely to underpin many of the responses to these challenges. However it is not clear how traditional forms of science and technology education will produce future citizens who are capable of contributing meaningfully within this space. Global moves to expand the notion of science and technology education for citizenship as well as pre-professional training offer scope to address this challenge. However, despite the rhetoric, little is understood how expanding science and technology education in this way might contribute to the development of a future-focused innovative culture. This chapter explores the nature of science and nature of technology and potential links to innovation education as well as ways in which innovation education might be fostered through science education and perhaps more particularly technology education.
