ABSTRACT

Summary: This chapter is a response to the trend among Canadian universities to embrace innovative and technologically based approaches to education. Using a case study approach, we explore innovation in universities from two perspectives: that of a university community as a whole engaged in embracing innovative and flexible ways of teaching and learning and that of teachers and students engaged in Internet-based learning in a professional program of study. A review of relevant terminology and literature offers important context. Issues related to change management and university culture are explored as well as strategies that may assist stakeholders as they adopt new and innovative approaches. Recommendations to assist learning leaders in universities as they plan for and implement innovative teaching and learning strategies are also provided.
