ABSTRACT

Summary: This chapter examines policies in the United Kingdom to connect higher education with innovation and enterprise in the economy and society, through support for a third mission of ‘knowledge exchange’. It provides the historical and academic research underpinnings to this third mission, as well as locating these in international practice. It explores how the third mission leads towards an embedded environment in universities for innovation education, and draws some tentative conclusions on achievement to date and prescriptions for next steps.
