ABSTRACT

Physical education (PE) is unique in the curriculum in that it focuses on the body and provides learning experiences in which bodily movement plays a significant part. Through a variety of enjoyable and creative activities it can develop physical competence and promote physical development in the areas of stamina, strength, suppleness and coordination. Children can work independently, with a partner, and in a group, and can develop skills of cooperation, communication, and teamwork. PE can initiate an awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the necessity to be active, lively and dynamic in order to keep fit and healthy. It also has an important part to play in the raising of selfesteem (Lawrence 1987).
