In his magnum opus, Catholicism (1994), Richard McBrien approaches the question of Catholic values in these terms:
There is no authoritative guidebook by which Christians can determine in almost every conceivable circumstance what is consistent with the Gospel and what is not … The challenge of moral education therefore is not the teaching of moral rules but the development of Christian character …
It is the ability to discern, the capacity to make wise and responsible decisions and to act on them.
