Everyone who has thought at all about the Hollywood aesthetic wants to formulate one of its peculiar qualities: that of direct emotional involvement, whether one calls it 'giving resonance to dramatic situations' or 'fleshing out the cliche' or whether, more abstractly, one talks in terms of identification patterns, empathy and catharsis.
