ABSTRACT

This chapter brings to the fore some of the lesser-known contributions of Durkheim to the study of nationalism. To that end it shall concentrate on material (mostly public discussions) hitherto ignored or little commented upon. These texts, which could be called occasional contributions to the study of the national question, correspond to the period between 1905 and 1909, although consideration will also be given to Durkheim's wartime writings, particularly his Allemagne au-dessus de tout (1915c). Perhaps there is no explicit Durkheimian theory of nationalism, but it is my conviction that many of Durkheim's works can be read profitably in the light of a nationalist problèmatique.
