ABSTRACT

The Highlands and Islands of Scotland have some of the most outstanding landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage in Northern Europe. The area has a rich natural resource, with a rural economy that relies heavily on primary production from fisheries, forestry and agriculture. Much of this is internationally important for landscape and wildlife and significant sections are protected through a range of conservation designations. Add to this the rich cultural and historic aspects and you have a unique destination. Many people living in the area value this and it is the major reason for tourism being the biggest single employer in the area. 1
