ABSTRACT

Published tests for mathematics tend to be standardised (more common) or criterion referenced (less common), though they may be a combination (France 1979). A standardised test is usually used to provide an ‘achievement age’, that is to say, it compares the performance of a particular child on the test with the achievement of his peers on the same test. A criterion referenced test is designed to test if set criteria of achievement have been met, for example the ability to add two 3-digit numbers with ‘carrying’ in the tens.
