ABSTRACT

Many children have to overcome potentially debilitating factors in their young lives, and many teachers are helping these young learners towards self-respect, self-confidence and mastery of their learning. Teachers do matter to children: they can and do make a difference between failure and success, despair and joy, excitement and disillusion. As adults we all remember the teachers who made us feel worthwhile and valued, who gave us broad horizons, who motivated us to persevere. Yes, teachers really can make a difference and light up learners from within.
