ABSTRACT

Technological and communication developments, although not the only factors, clearly played an important role in shaping campaigning techniques over the twentieth century. One of the main areas where the Internet could have an impact is in the style of party campaigning. Although campaigning is commonly connected with electioneering, it has become an almost permanent feature of party activities (Bowler and Farrell, 1992). Here the literature on the development of campaign communication is useful in placing the growth of the Internet into a broader, long-term perspective. In order to understand the impact of the Internet we need to have some sense of the historical development of campaign techniques.
