ETYMOLOGY: From Fr. flânerie (apparently aimless strolling; sauntering along city streets; urban sociological voyeurism); some authorities infer an allusion to Irish novelist Flann O’Brien (pseud. Brian O’Nolan, b. 1911, d. 1966).
