ABSTRACT
The particular aim of this paper is to draw attention to the epistemological importance of a well-established but sadly neglected principle of semantics which finds its origin in the thinking of Ludwig Wittgenstein 1 . The principle, which I will henceforth refer to as the ‘family resemblance principle’ because of the example chosen by Wittgenstein to illustrate its existence, can be stated as follows.
