ABSTRACT
Although the eighteenth century is not a brilliant period in English drama, the first half of it saw two developments of historical importance in the theatre. The one was a change in the quality of the managers of the playhouses, and the other was the moral reform (accompanied by increasing sentimentality) in comedy.1
