ABSTRACT

There has been much criticism of the way in which western audiences are informed about the Third World. As the UNESCO study Many Voices One World commented: ‘The imbalance in the flow of news and information between industrialised and developing countries [has been] a major topic in international meetings…. Today virtually no-one disputes the reality of this imbalance.’ It went on to note that ‘It must be acknowledged that the way in which the public in the industrialised countries is informed about the Third World is not very effective’ (UNESCO 1980:36, 180).
