Slavery as a Punishment in Roman Criminal Law

This paper will set out to explain how penal slavery could, in Roman law, be considered separately from other punishments of forced labour and to consider whether this continued to be the case. It will also attempt to explain what was involved in a sentence of penal slavery and the status of those on whom such a punishment would have been inflicted.
