ABSTRACT
Ethnic or religious mobilisation can often be found at the heart of political competition. As with all social cleavages, fault lines within societies form along these differing identities, creating opposing interests. These differences of interest, in turn, offer themselves to potential political, or occasionally violent, conflict.
