ABSTRACT
Since the 1970s, if not earlier, the Islamic world has been caught up in a rising tide of movements to reverse the previously declining role of religion in political and social life. While such movements have taken on unique characteristics in each country, the examples of Iran and Egypt illustrate many of the important trends-all of which long predate the current phase of ‘Islamic resurgence’.
