ABSTRACT

Having considered the development of human capital in the previous chapter, we now turn to the issue of physical capital. We examine in section 8.1 the supply of investible funds and the question whether Irish economic development was retarded by a shortage of resources for capital investment. Section 8.2 outlines the changing volume and structure of investment and discusses how effectively Ireland used its investment resources. Finally, section 8.3 considers the influence of public policy on investment through the level and composition of public capital expenditure and other instruments.
