China is big. Diversity and differences are almost defining characteristics. So it is necessary to begin by outlining the social and historical context within which children, childhood and children’s rights are set in China. This size and variety, means that only a brief, and to some extent arbitrary, survey of China, children and rights issues can be presented here.1
