ABSTRACT
In the second issue of Tygodnik Powszechny in 1987, that of 11 January, an article appeared entitled The Poor Poles Look at the Ghetto’. The article, signed by Jan Blonski, published as it was in a journal carrying great weight, may unfortunately be understood as the affirmation and quintessence (unintended of course), of a virulent anti-Polish propaganda campaign conducted endlessly for dozens of years by the enemies not of the government, nor the economic or political system of present-day Poland, but simply of the Polish nation. This article is in my view a very dangerous propagandistic enunciation, and it is regrettable on two scores. One, that it was written by an eminent specialist in literature, and two, that it appeared in a leading Catholic socio-cultural Polish paper. How the words ‘Father, forgive them, they know not what they do’ spring to mind!
