ABSTRACT

Hamlet (Facebook News Feed Edition) (2008) written by Sarah Schmelling and photoshopped by Angela Liao is an excellent work to look at more closely in relation to the central focus of this chapter. 1 This is an example of internet art that involves performance and revolves around a social networking website in ways that are exclusive to the piece, which also exists outside the original social medium within which it was created. It employs elements unique to Facebook and similar social networking sites while juxtaposing others from diverse sources that include dramatic literature and online performance. This work also employs aspects of appropriation that came to the fore very prominently in conceptual and pop art during the twentieth century.
