ABSTRACT

The reality of the working life as a teacher in a ‘forced’ academy 1 in England can be very daunting, given some schools' past histories as ‘challenging schools’ then labelled as ‘failing schools’ and made to suffer the consequences. This is so much more than going through the processes of school closure, re-opening as an academy with a national business sponsor, and being part of a national chain in a semi-privatised system outside local authority control. Schools' reinvention resulted in total makeovers including new names, logos and school uniform; school Heads, Senior Leadership Teams (SLTs), board of governors, new strategic plans, new sets of guiding principles and new staff contracts.
