ABSTRACT

Microtechnology can enormously enhance the learning opportunities of children with communication difficulties. This chapter describes the work of the ACE Centre which was established to provide information and advice about the use of microelectronic aids to communication in education. The ability to communicate is vital to the health and development of all individuals. Not only do people need to make known their more basic needs, they must exchange information with those around them and express their emotions. A factor common to many children with special needs is that the ability to communicate is in some way impaired. In 1980, the government launched the Microelectronic Education Programme, a major initiative to promote the use of microelectronics in education. In addition to answering the many telephone and the written enquiries, a number of channels have been adopted for the task of dissemination.
