ABSTRACT
The Gift, by Marcel Mauss ([1925] 1990), is the ‘master narrative’ of economic anthropology, and anthropology’s gift to neoclassical economics. Many in the field secretly believe that this present from the French master disrupts exchange theory in neoclassical economics. If only we could get economists to read it, they might carry out some fieldwork!
