ABSTRACT
In this chapter we examine the precollege and in-college experiences of white students as they express their understanding of their own racial group membership and their views of other racial/ethnic groups. Whiteness develops and is affected by changing social conditions and discourses about racial issues. The current series of debates and litigation around race relations on campus is a particularly powerful part of the societal and university context in which racial identity is played out.
