ABSTRACT

According to Moran and McGlynn (1994) cross-training can be defined as “using another sport, activity or training technique to help improve performance in the primary sport or activity”. Cross-training is described by the authors as a powerful training tool which can help to improve performance in the primary sport and also avoid over-training and burnout Cases in point are downhill skiers bicycling or mountain-biking during the offseason in order to maintain or improve the strength and endurance of their leg muscles, and volleyball players using weight training to enhance their leg and arm strength. Crosstraining has successfully been applied not only in top-level sport, but also in rehabilitation and in health and fitness training programmes for a longer time.
