ABSTRACT

The size, physique, and functional characteristics of young athletes typically reflect the demands of specific sports. Soccer is a sport that requires a high degree of both sportspecific skill and overall athleticism. Motivation of young soccer players to participate in the sport and their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the sport are also relevant in player selection and development, but such data are generally lacking. The present study compares the physique, motor fitness, sport-specific skill, motivation for sport, and satisfaction with sport of 15-16 year old soccer players classified by level of playing time over the course of a season.
