ABSTRACT

Guidance and communication are undoubtedly the most important parts for the successful route of a soccer team and the completion of its goals. The cohesion among the team members, and also the cohesion among the team members and their coach are very important. Generally speaking, we can find in a team a homogenous construct in the team players’ abilities, in their psychological or personal characteristics and in their social origin. In sports, cohesion is defined as a) the attraction among the players, similarity in performance (Biondo and Pirritano, 1985); b) the feelings of satisfaction from the social (Grand and Carron, 1982; Carron, 1990) and the work-related perspective (Martens and Peterson, 1971); c) the acceptance of the team’s goals (Grand and Carron, 1982) and the friendly competition among the players (Myers, 1962; Papanikolaou, 1988; Papanikolaou et al. in press); d) the understanding, acceptance, and output of the role (Grand and Carron, 1982; Carron, 1984). According to Shaw (1971), cohesion consists of three different sub-meanings:-

• attraction to the team, in the sense that the player does not want to leave the team; • the team’s ethical motivation; • coordination of the team players’ efforts.
